Slice the sausage. Finely chop the onion and garlic. Strain the lentils.
Use a large pot to heat the olive oil, and fry the onion on it. When soft, add the sausage and garlic, and fry it all for another 2 minutes. Add the lentils and the broth, so that it covers the lentils. Add spices, salt, and pepper. Stew everything covered for about 20 minutes.
To make the pesto, blend all the sauce ingredients together.
Serve the lentils with tomato pesto.
